Stephen D. Ryan, MD, MPH

Dr. Stephen Ryan has returned to the Rochester General Health System as the Administrative Director of Long Term Care and Senior Services. As one of his initial roles, Dr. Ryan will serve as Medical Director at Independent Living for Seniors – a role he previously held from 2001 to 2006.

Dr. Ryan earned his medical degree from the University of Buffalo and completed his Internal Medicine training at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland. He completed fellowships in Geriatric Medicine and Primary Care Research at Johns Hopkins where he received his Masters of Public Health.. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Care.

In 1997, Dr. Ryan came to Rochester General Hospital and the Independent living for Seniors/PACE model as a primary care geriatrician. He quickly grew passionate about the comprehensive care provided to frail seniors within an interdisciplinary team. He subsequently developed teaching and administrative roles, and became Medical Director of ILS and RGH Geriatric Unit Chief in 2001. He continued to practice and teach geriatric medicine to physicians, residents and nurses across the continuum of care.

Most recently Dr. Ryan worked for United Healthcare as the Regional Medical Director for the UNY Evercare Program. The Evercare model provided care coordination and clinical support through a nurse practitioner to nursing home residents. In 2008, Dr. Ryan was honored with the Carter Catlett Williams award for excellence in aging and long-term care services for his work across Upstate NY.

Dr. Ryan is very excited to return to the Rochester General Health System, newly developed Long Term Care and Senior Services division as it builds an integrated approach to care for seniors. He joins 6 geriatricians and their teams that lead across the continuum of care. He believes that ILS-PACE has always provided extraordinary opportunities to care for patients and their families who would otherwise require long term nursing home care. And ILS-PACE will serve as a working laboratory of how coordinated care can be successful under CMMS – proposed bundled payment plans.
